THE 12

Dr. Helkena Mo
Dr. Helkena Marie Mo is not trying to change the world.
Not really.
She is just trying to understand it.
Born in Los Diego, California, at only twenty-three weeks, Helkena was not expected to survive. The doctors measured her chances carefully, spoke in soft voices, and prepared her parents for heartbreak. But Helkena, tiny as she was, had other ideas.
She lived.
The daughter of Jack and Doris Montgomery, Helkena’s earliest years were full of love, curiosity, and a mind that seemed to wake up faster than the rest of her could follow. She was the kind of child who did not simply ask why the sky was blue — she wanted to know why blue was the color people agreed to call it, whether the atmosphere had an opinion, and if clouds could be considered “emotionally indecisive water.”
Then, when she was five years old, her world broke.
Her parents were killed, and Helkena was taken in by her grandfather, Sterling Montgomery. He adopted her, brought her home to his quiet farm near Mill Creek, and became the steady center of her life.
She called him Papa.
Papa called her Little Bit.
The nickname stuck. Not because Helkena was small in spirit — she was anything but — but because she had always been slight, fragile-looking, and easy to underestimate. To Papa, she would always be that thin little red-haired girl who arrived carrying more grief than any child should have to hold and more questions than any adult could possibly answer before supper.
Papa did his best.
More than that, he loved her well.
He gave her room to think, room to ask, room to wonder, and when needed, he gently pulled her back down to earth before she floated too far into whatever strange galaxy her mind had wandered into that day.
That happened often.
By the time most children were learning simple spelling words, Helkena was reading books far above her age, not to impress anyone, but because she was hungry to know what things meant. One afternoon at school, she sat under an old oak tree reading a full-sized adult thesaurus like it was the most natural thing in the world.
That was the day she met Conny Garcia.
Conny asked if a thesaurus was like a dinosaur.
Helkena, completely serious, explained that it was a “reference lexicon for locating synonyms and cognates of less useful lexical selections.”
Conny’s brain nearly packed a suitcase and left.
From that moment on, the two girls became inseparable.
Conny never treated Helkena like a trophy, a miracle, or a walking science fair. She teased her. Challenged her. Dragged her back into normal life when Helkena started speaking fluent dictionary at people who only asked what she wanted for lunch.
If Papa was the hand holding the kite string, Conny was the one yelling, “Reel her in before she floats away to brain-land!”
Helkena needed both of them.
Because for all her brilliance, Helkena was not easy.
She could be intense. Too intense. She could talk too fast, think too far ahead, miss the obvious human thing in front of her, and then feel terrible once someone pointed it out. She could be impatient with slow answers, reckless when curious, and stubborn enough to argue with a locked door if she thought the door was being unreasonable.
But she was never cold.
Not where it mattered.
Helkena’s mind may have lived among equations, viruses, cellular structures, and impossible questions, but her heart was always pulled toward people — especially the sick, the overlooked, the lonely, and the ones everyone else had already written off.
That is what led her into science.
Not fame.
Not status.
Not magazine covers.
Not applause.
Questions.
Why does the body fail?
Why does one person recover while another fades?
What if damage is not always an ending?
What if broken cells still have a language, and someone only needs to listen closely enough?
Helkena eventually earned ten PhDs by the age of twenty-two, but not because she was chasing titles. Titles bored her. Prestige made her uncomfortable. Ceremonies made her itchy.
She studied because she could not stop.
Virology, bioengineering, psychology, cellular repair, genetic structures — each field gave her another piece of a puzzle she had been staring at since childhood. Her work focuses on genetic repair, cellular modification, and viral countermeasures, the kind of science that requires patience, imagination, and just enough recklessness to chase an answer everyone else has already declared impossible.
At BT&G Corporation, Helkena became known for breakthroughs that rarely arrived with grand speeches or dramatic announcements. More often, they came from late nights, half-finished notes, terrible posture, too little sleep, and a sudden thought that made her sit bolt upright and whisper, “Wait a minute…”
Conny says Helkena learns by osmosis.
Just leave a textbook under her pillow and check back in the morning.
The truth is both less magical and more impressive.
Helkena listens.
She connects.
She remembers.
She notices the tiny things others dismiss. A strange symptom. A repeated phrase. A pattern hidden inside noise. A detail buried beneath someone’s grief. Her genius is not just that she knows more than most people. It is that she sees connections where others see walls.
Still, being brilliant does not make her graceful.
Helkena can unravel a viral structure but forget to eat. She can explain cellular behavior in terrifying detail but freeze up around someone she has a crush on. She can walk into a room full of strangers and somehow make three new friends before finding the coffee — but when her heart is involved, all that courage suddenly starts looking for the nearest exit.
Especially at Brick’s Bar & Grill.
Brick’s is one of the few places where Helkena feels grounded. Not because it is quiet. It is not. Not because it is refined. Absolutely not. Brick’s is noise, laughter, food, old friends, bad decisions, and the kind of familiar chaos that lets her stop being “Doctor Mo” for a while and just be Helkena.
It is also where the bartender works.
Handsome. Strong. A war hero. The kind of man Papa would probably approve of, which somehow makes the whole thing worse.
Helkena can stare down a scientific impossibility without blinking, but talking to him like a normal woman with normal feelings?
Terrifying.
So she waits.
And overthinks.
And waits some more.
For all her intellect, Helkena is still very human. She likes music loud, conversations honest, and coffee dark enough to qualify as a controlled substance. In her younger years, music was one of her great releases. The Squished Chicks were loud, joyful, messy, and alive — a band built from friendship, noise, and shared chaos. The guitars are mostly quieter now, but that part of her never really disappeared. It just found other ways to make noise.
She still loves to laugh.
She still loves to party.
She still drinks more than she probably should.
And yes, if someone foolishly challenges her to a drinking game, that person has made a terrible life choice.
Helkena is not reckless because she thinks nothing can hurt her.
She is reckless because sometimes the question in front of her becomes so bright that she forgets the room is on fire.
That is where Conny helps.
That is where Papa helps.
That is where the people who love her matter most.
They remind her to eat.
To sleep.
To breathe.
To come back from brain-land.
To stop using seven-syllable words on innocent civilians.
To remember that being right is not always the same thing as being kind.
And Helkena tries.
Not perfectly.
But honestly.
She is open, intense, passionate, loyal, funny, impatient, warm, and sometimes completely impossible. She talks easily with strangers, asks for help without embarrassment, thanks people like they matter because to her they do, and has a strange way of making people feel seen even while her own mind is racing three miles ahead.
She is not a movement leader.
She does not think of herself as a hero.
She is not polished enough for that, not controlled enough, not careful enough, and definitely not good at pretending to be something she is not.
Helkena is simply a woman of contradictions.
Brilliant but human.
Fragile but stubborn.
Warm but sharp.
Reckless but compassionate.
Grounded by love, restless by nature, and forever chasing the next question.
She does not need to be perfect to matter.
In fact, the people who love her would probably say that is the point.
